It wasn't hard to guess the activity in the St. Louis Mills parking
lot. The smell and smoke of barbecue floated through the air as 37 teams
competed in the 2008 Kick-Off Cook-Off Friday and Saturday at the mall.
The Optimist Club of North St. Louis County hosted the event to raise
money for the Childhood Cancer Campaign. For more of this story, click

Sorry we were not able to be in attendance at the 1st Quarter meeting. We were a little occupied with Reece deciding to be fashionably late... After much waiting and praying for her arrival she finally did so on Halloween Morning, October 31st 2007, at 5:06 am. She weighed in at 6lbs, 7oz, and was 20 inches long.
She has already grown and is doing great. Mom and I are both very tired,
but wouldn't trade it for the world!
Ellen is doing great and healing nicely. Still no heavy lifting, but she
looks great and felling better each day. Reece is doing very well and only
waking us a couple times a night for feedings.
Thanks for all the well wishes and cards!
-Eric, Ellen, & Reece Pahl

On November 13, 2007, North & South Optimist Clubs came together for the umpteenth time to continue their tradition of Passing the Trophy. The trophy is the back end of a mule, and represents a rich tradition. South’s President Mary Kacic and North’s President Jan Kummer continued that tradition. There was 50/50, drawing for “Big Bear,” and Holiday raffle tickets sold. Also, there was a great deal of “fining” going on. Governor Charlie was fined for bending over to pick up some pennies on the floor. She was charged with praying at an inappropriate time. Someone countered the ‘finer’ saying there was never an inappropriate time to pray and the finer had to pay double! Lt. Governors Joan McGuire and Kathy Henson witnessed the comedic events of the day and the Governor will be interested in seeing what their club visitation report reads!

As some of
you know, Optimist International is having it’s First Annual CCC Duck Race
at the 2008 International Convention in Grapevine, Texas. Proceeds will
benefit the Optimist International Research Fund in Pediatric Hematology and
Oncology and/or the Canadian Childhood Cancer Campaign. What you probably
didn't know is that everyone can participate even if they are not going to
Convention! That's right! Everyone has a chance to take part in this year's
duck race. District CCC Chair, will have the opportunity to make their
donation count toward the District's CCC goal. Please keep in mind that
there will be no Member Credit given from the Foundation for the ducks. Attached you will find a
flyer
explaining how to purchase the ducks for a mere $10.00 US/CN each:
Please
have everyone that purchases a duck complete the form and submit the form
and the money to Optimist International. A form must be completed and
submitted for each duck purchased. Keep in mind that there is no limit to
the amount of ducks that can be purchased.
The only limitation to keep in mind is that all advance purchases must be received by Optimist International no later than June 16, 2008. All additional ducks after this deadline must be purchased in the House of Optimism at the Programs/CCC Booth during normal hours of operation.
Please contact EMO District CCC Chair, Sarah Cato at sfm2cato@charter.net if you have questions.
Good luck!
Governor Charlie

Loretta Kelly has launched a campaign to sponsor a new club in Brazzaville. The Twin City Optimists (TCO) will offer support, guidance and follow-up as the Congo Optimists build their new club and begin providing services for children in their area. The TCO will provide the $200 charter fee plus $1 fee per charter member and will share ideas about what has been successful for the TCO club and the East Missouri District. So, where is the Congo? Located on the Congo River in Africa, Brazzaville is the capitol of the Republic of the Congo (a separate country from the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Its estimated population is 1.5 million, with more than 1.2 million in the city proper and the remaining in the suburbs in the Pool Region. Learn more about the Congo in future issues.
